The ostrich is the biggest bird species on Earth. Although it has wings, it is unable to fly. Instead, it has evolved into one of the fastest-running birds, using its powerful legs to escape danger. Ostriches naturally live in Africa, but they are also raised on farms around the world for their meat and other products.

What Does an Ostrich Look Like?

Ostriches have a very distinctive appearance. They have long, slender legs, a large body, small wings, a lengthy neck, and a strong pointed beak. An adult ostrich usually weighs between 200 and 300 pounds and can reach heights of around 9 feet.

Their bodies are covered with feathers. Male ostriches typically have mostly black feathers with white feathers underneath their wings and around their tails, while females usually have grayish-brown coloring. Their eyes are extremely large, measuring nearly 2 inches across, making them the biggest eyes of any land animal.

How Fast Can Ostriches Run?

Ostriches are well known for their incredible running ability. Their long, muscular legs allow them to reach speeds of about 40 miles per hour, making them the fastest birds on land.

Their powerful legs are also useful for defense. When threatened, an ostrich can deliver a very strong kick that may seriously injure or even kill predators, including humans or lions. However, most of the time, ostriches rely on their remarkable speed to escape danger rather than fight.

Why Do Ostriches Have Wings If They Cannot Fly?

Although ostrich wings cannot lift them into the air, they still serve important purposes. When an ostrich runs at high speed, its wings help it maintain balance and make quick turns. They also play an important role during courtship, as males use their wings to attract females during mating displays.

What Do Ostriches Eat and How Do They Live?

Ostriches are not picky eaters and consume whatever food is available in their environment. Their diet includes plants, insects, and small creatures such as lizards.

These birds often live together in groups called herds. A typical herd contains around 10 ostriches, although some groups can grow to include as many as 100 individuals. Living in groups helps provide protection from predators.

Ostrich herds share a large nest where females lay their eggs, allowing multiple adults to help guard them. Ostrich eggs are the largest eggs produced by any living bird, with an average weight of about 3 pounds.

Do Ostriches Really Hide Their Heads in the Ground?

Despite the popular cartoon image, ostriches do not actually bury their heads in the soil when they are frightened. Instead, they may lower their bodies and stretch their necks flat along the ground to remain hidden. When viewed from far away, this position can create the illusion that their heads have disappeared underground.

Interesting Facts About Ostriches

Ostriches have powerful feet equipped with claws that can grow about 4 inches long, making their kicks even more dangerous.

When running at full speed, an ostrich can cover a distance of nearly 16 feet with a single stride.

Ostriches sometimes swallow small rocks and pebbles, which help them grind and digest the food in their stomachs.

In some parts of the world, people organize ostrich races where riders sit on the backs of these enormous birds using specially designed saddles and equipment.

Unlike most birds, which have three or four toes, ostriches have only two toes on each foot, a unique feature that helps them run efficiently.
