Winter transforms China’s landscapes into breathtaking scenes of snow and ice. From ancient palaces and sacred mountains to peaceful villages and frozen forests, different regions across the country display their own unique winter beauty. Snow adds a magical atmosphere to these destinations, attracting travelers who want to experience China’s most stunning snowy landscapes.
Here are some of the most impressive places in China to visit during the winter season.
Potala Palace in Lhasa
The Potala Palace is the most iconic landmark in Lhasa and can be seen from many parts of the city. Before the Dalai Lama moved to India in 1959, the palace served as his winter residence.
The present structure was built in the mid-17th century on the location of an earlier palace from the 7th century, which was constructed during the reign of the famous Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo. The magnificent complex rises 13 stories high and stands on Red Hill.
During winter, snow occasionally covers the palace and surrounding landscape, creating a peaceful and breathtaking scene. Visitors can enjoy the quiet beauty of the snowy environment while admiring this historic Tibetan masterpiece.
Jiuzhaigou Valley in Sichuan
Snow gives Jiuzhaigou a dreamlike appearance during the winter months. As temperatures drop, forests, mountains, and rocks become covered in white snow, creating a stunning contrast with the valley’s famous blue and turquoise lakes.
Winter is considered the quieter travel season in Jiuzhaigou, meaning visitors can often enjoy the scenery with fewer crowds and lower travel expenses. The combination of snow-covered forests and colorful water creates a landscape that feels almost like a fairy tale.
Yellow Mountain in Anhui
Huangshan, or Yellow Mountain, is famous for its Five Wonders: unique pine trees, unusual rock formations, seas of clouds, winter snow, and natural hot springs.
Although the mountain can be visited throughout the year, winter offers the special opportunity to see snow-covered peaks and trees. The colder season also provides better chances of witnessing the magnificent sea of clouds compared with summer.
The contrast between icy mountain scenery and warm hot springs makes Yellow Mountain an unforgettable winter destination.
Changbai Mountain in Jilin
Changbai Mountain is a dormant volcano known for its spectacular natural scenery, including beautiful lakes, hot springs, endless forests, and rare plants and animals such as Changbai ginseng.
The most famous attraction on the mountain is Tianchi, or Heavenly Lake. Covered in winter snow and surrounded by mountains, the lake takes on a mysterious and peaceful atmosphere that makes it one of the region’s most beautiful sights.
Mount Fanjing in Guizhou
Mount Fanjing is one of China’s five most important Buddhist mountains and is regarded as a sacred site dedicated to Maitreya Buddha.
The mountain’s peaceful environment and extraordinary scenery attract many visitors. During winter, climbing Mount Fanjing offers the chance to see snow-covered landscapes, frozen scenery, and delicate frost formations.
Standing at 2,494 meters above sea level, the mountain provides spectacular views of countless peaks rising through clouds. Visitors may also have the rare opportunity to spot the black-crowned crane, one of China’s most precious bird species.
Shuangfeng Forest Farm in Hailin
Shuangfeng Forest Farm, also known as “China Snow Town,” is located about a six-hour drive from Harbin. This charming village has become one of China’s most popular winter destinations.
Snowfall usually begins in October and continues until March, creating thick snow layers that can reach around two meters deep. The snow here is famous for its soft texture, high quality, and impressive accumulation.
The snow-covered wooden houses, forests, and quiet village atmosphere create a scene that looks like a winter fairy tale.
West Lake in Hangzhou
Hangzhou’s West Lake is famous for its beautiful scenery and cultural legends. The Broken Bridge is especially well known because it is said to be the place where the White Snake fairy met her lover in Chinese folklore.
Snowfall at West Lake is relatively rare, making the famous “Melting Snow at Broken Bridge” scene particularly special. After a snowfall on a clear day, the snow-covered bridge appears like a silver ribbon stretching across the lake.
As the snow begins to melt, parts of the bridge seem to disappear, creating the illusion that it has been broken. Visitors often stand at a distance to admire this unique winter landscape.
Forbidden City in Beijing
For many Chinese people, winter is considered one of the best times to visit the Forbidden City, especially after a fresh snowfall.
With fewer tourists and a layer of white snow covering the ancient buildings, the imperial palace takes on an even more majestic and solemn appearance. The combination of traditional architecture and snowy scenery creates a memorable experience.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in Yunnan
The best time to visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is during autumn and winter, especially in January and February. During this period, clear skies provide excellent views of the snow-covered peaks and surrounding landscapes.
The mountain stretches across approximately 455 square kilometers and offers many outdoor activities, including sightseeing, hiking, exploration, and mountaineering.
Besides its spectacular natural scenery, visitors can also learn about the traditions and culture of the local Dongba people.
Hemu Village in Altay
Located in Xinjiang, Hemu Village is a remote and traditional settlement surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. It is one of the largest and most isolated communities of the Tuvan ethnic group.
The local people have preserved their traditional lifestyle, with many residents still relying on animal husbandry. During winter, the village hosts special activities such as skiing, bonfire gatherings, and folk performances.
Covered in snow, Hemu Village creates a peaceful atmosphere that feels far removed from modern life.
Mount Laojun in Luoyang
Mount Laojun is famous for its Taoist temples and breathtaking scenery, especially during the winter season.
Although visitors can explore the mountain throughout the year, winter provides the unique opportunity to see snow-covered peaks and a beautiful sea of clouds. The snowy landscape makes it an excellent destination for hiking and enjoying the tranquility of nature.
Mohe in Xilinji
Mohe is located in the northernmost part of China near the Russian border and is known as “China’s Arctic Town.” It is the only place in China where visitors have a chance to experience natural phenomena such as the aurora borealis and the midnight sun.
Arctic Village is the most popular location for travelers hoping to witness these rare northern spectacles. The snowy scenery and extreme northern environment make Mohe a unique winter destination.
Zhangjiajie in Hunan
Zhangjiajie becomes especially enchanting in winter when its famous mountains and sandstone pillars are covered with snow and ice.
The region’s deep valleys, towering peaks, and unique rock formations create a stunning winter landscape. Unlike many northern destinations, Zhangjiajie’s mountain formations help block strong winds, allowing visitors to enjoy snowy scenery in a relatively comfortable environment.
Snow usually arrives in December, covering thousands of mountains and hundreds of streams with a layer of white. The combination of mist, snow, and towering peaks creates a magical scene often described as a silver fairyland.
