Whether you are passionate about nature, interested in art, or fascinated by architecture, Gardens by the Bay has something to offer. This impressive 101-hectare green space is located near Singapore’s central business district and combines a variety of indoor conservatories with outdoor gardens. Even after living in Singapore for three and a half years, Gardens by the Bay remains one of the attractions I most often recommend to people visiting the city. Here are five reasons why it deserves a place on your Singapore itinerary.
1. Three Experiences in One
The spectacular glass conservatories, Cloud Forest and Flower Dome, recreate contrasting environments and climates. Inside, visitors can experience plant life associated with a cool, dry Mediterranean setting as well as the humid conditions of tropical mountain regions.
The experience continues outdoors, where four specially designed gardens showcase landscapes inspired by the equatorial environment of Southeast Asia. Together, these indoor and outdoor spaces create the feeling of exploring three distinctly different destinations without leaving Gardens by the Bay.
2. Innovative High-Tech Conservatories
The enormous faceted glass structures surrounding the conservatories are impressive both visually and technologically. Their design allows natural daylight to enter the buildings while helping keep much of the outside heat away.
The Flower Dome has also earned recognition as the largest column-free greenhouse in the world. The combination of horticulture, architecture, and advanced engineering makes these conservatories a remarkable example of what modern gardening can achieve.
3. A Showcase of Public Art
Art is an important part of the Gardens by the Bay experience. Throughout the gardens, visitors can discover around 200 sculptures created by both Singaporean and international artists.
The artworks span a wide range of artistic styles and materials, creating unexpected points of interest among the plants, pathways, conservatories, and open spaces. This combination of nature and art gives the gardens an additional cultural dimension.
4. The World's Second-Tallest Indoor Waterfall
One of the most striking features inside the mist-filled Cloud Forest is its 35-meter-high mountain. Water flows down the mountain in a spectacular indoor waterfall that held the title of the world's tallest for several years.
Singapore eventually surpassed its own record in 2019 when the 40-meter Rain Vortex opened at Jewel Changi Airport. As a result, the Cloud Forest waterfall is now the world's second-tallest indoor waterfall.
Elevated paths allow visitors to explore the Cloud Forest from different levels, offering changing perspectives of the mountain, vegetation, and cascading water.
5. The Glowing Supertrees
The Supertrees are perhaps the most recognizable feature of Gardens by the Bay. These enormous artificial trees vary in height, with the tallest reaching approximately 50 meters. There are 18 Supertrees in the grove, and they serve several practical purposes in addition to their dramatic appearance.
The structures function as vertical gardens, collect rainwater, provide air circulation for the conservatories, and produce solar energy. Elevated walkways connect some of the Supertrees, giving visitors an opportunity to admire the surrounding gardens from above while enjoying wider views across Singapore.
Inspired in appearance by Africa's distinctive baobab trees, the Supertrees are covered with a variety of plants and fitted with solar cells. The collected solar energy helps power Garden Rhapsody, the popular evening light and music performance. The show's musical themes change according to the season, so checking the current schedule before visiting is worthwhile.
When to Visit Gardens by the Bay
Late afternoon is one of the best times to explore Gardens by the Bay. Arriving toward the end of the day allows you to experience the conservatories while there is still daylight and then remain in the gardens until after sunset.
As darkness arrives, the Supertrees come alive during Garden Rhapsody, creating a completely different atmosphere from the daytime experience. Visiting at this time therefore allows you to enjoy both sides of Gardens by the Bay in a single trip.
