Shenzhen's Ping An Finance Center: World's 4th Tallest Building

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has officially recognized the completion of the Ping An Finance Center in Shenzhen, China, according to its criteria for tall buildings. Rising 599 meters, or 1,965 feet, above the city, the tower was recognized at the time as the second-tallest building in China and the fourth-tallest building in the world, following the Burj Khalifa, Shanghai Tower, and Makkah Royal Clock Tower.

A Major Landmark in Shenzhen

Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF), the Ping An Finance Center stands in the center of Shenzhen's Futian District. The enormous tower contains more than 100 floors of office space positioned above a substantial public podium.

A multi-level atrium forms an important part of the lower complex, incorporating retail stores, restaurants, and transportation facilities. These spaces connect the building not only with the surrounding city but also with the wider Pearl River Delta region.

A Tower Shaped by Structure and Form

The CTBUH has compared the tower's overall shape to a tightly stretched steel cable, pulled simultaneously upward by the sky and downward toward the ground. Near the summit, the exterior gradually narrows into a pyramid-like form, creating the building's distinctive prismatic appearance.

Eight composite megacolumns are integrated into the exterior envelope and play an important role in both the visual identity and structural performance of the tower. These enormous structural elements streamline the building's form and improve its resistance to wind forces.

Their design helps reduce the building's baseline wind loads by approximately 35 percent, an important achievement for a skyscraper of such extraordinary height.

An Innovative Stainless Steel Facade

One of the most notable aspects of the Ping An Finance Center is its highly advanced exterior facade system. The project incorporates approximately 1,700 tons of 316L stainless steel, making the building's envelope the largest stainless steel facade system in the world.

The choice of 316L stainless steel was made in part because of its strong resistance to corrosion. This quality is particularly valuable in Shenzhen, where the building is exposed to a salty coastal environment.

By using a material capable of withstanding these conditions, the architects and engineers designed the exterior to preserve its appearance for many decades while also providing the tower with a distinctive and durable architectural skin.
