The Fascinating World of Spotted Hyenas

This month, I’m thrilled to shine a spotlight on some of the most formidable females in the animal world: Spotted Hyenas. These remarkable animals are not only powerful and intelligent but also deeply devoted mothers. They have quickly become some of my favourite animals to watch, and their unusual behaviours continue to fascinate me every time I observe them.

A New Spotted Hyena Den at Thornybush

We recently came across a newly established Spotted Hyena den in the northern section of the Thornybush reserve. This discovery has given our guests the chance to observe some truly heartwarming moments involving the tiny hyena cubs. At the same time, the new den has provided an excellent opportunity to learn more about the complicated social relationships and hierarchy that shape the lives of these extraordinary animals.

A Society Led by Female Spotted Hyenas

One of the most fascinating features of Spotted Hyena society is its strong female dominance. Each clan is headed by a dominant female, supported by a group of other high-ranking females. This close network helps maintain the organization and stability of the clan, with the dominant female’s daughters and sisters often taking on important positions within the group.

Female Spotted Hyenas are also frequently mistaken for males. One reason is their physical size, as females are typically larger than males. Another is their unusual reproductive anatomy, which outwardly resembles male genitalia. Although females possess fully functional female reproductive systems, their distinctive appearance develops partly because they are exposed to elevated levels of androgens before birth.

Social Hierarchy and Differences Among Cubs

Spending time at the den allows us to observe the fascinating social structure of Spotted Hyenas at close range. One particularly noticeable difference can be seen between cubs born to females of different social ranks.

Cubs belonging to higher-ranking mothers are generally larger and more assertive. This difference is associated with the greater exposure to testosterone they experience while developing in the womb. By comparison, cubs born to lower-ranking females are exposed to hormonal conditions connected with subordinate status, which contributes to them being smaller and more submissive from an early age.

Dedicated Mothers and Remarkable Resilience

Spotted Hyena mothers show an extraordinary level of commitment to their young. Each female cares for her own cubs individually, even when several mothers and their litters occupy the same communal den. Mothers generally do not transport meat back to the den, instead providing their cubs with the nourishment they need through their milk.

Young cubs depend on their mother’s milk until roughly 5–8 months of age, when they begin eating meat from kills made nearby. Even after they have started eating solid food, however, they continue nursing for much longer, often until they reach approximately 18 months old.

The strength of Spotted Hyena mothers extends far beyond their ability to raise their young. They are remarkably resilient animals and can survive devastating injuries. Some females have endured the loss of limbs or eyes after confrontations with lions or other hyenas, yet they are often able to recover and continue caring for their offspring with remarkable determination.

Celebrating the Female Spotted Hyena

Spotted Hyenas combine physical strength, intelligence, social complexity, and remarkable maternal devotion in a way that makes them truly extraordinary animals. Their female-led societies and the incredible resilience shown by their mothers provide a fascinating glimpse into the complexity of the animal kingdom.

Watching these powerful females interact, raise their cubs, and navigate their social world never becomes less fascinating. Their strength and resilience continue to make their lives some of the most captivating stories to witness in the wild.
