Zhouzhuang
Zhouzhuang is a destination that brings together the charm of traditional Chinese water villages. Its peaceful scenery of small bridges, flowing water, and local homes creates a simple atmosphere that is difficult to resist. Strolling through its tranquil lanes, visitors can admire beautiful countryside, clean waterways, and historic remains while discovering the roots of local folk culture. It is also a wonderful place to experience a sense of freedom, serenity, and leisurely living.
Encircled by water, Zhouzhuang resembles a brilliant pearl resting on the lake. The traditional residences in the town have retained much of their original character, preserving the distinctive architectural style and atmosphere of an ancient Chinese water village.
Xitang
Xitang is characterized by waterways that run throughout the town, shimmering green surfaces, and peaceful scenery. In the morning, small bridges cross the rivers while mist hangs softly over the water. At sunset, warm light falls across the town as fishing boats glide quietly along the canals, creating a classic image of a Jiangnan water village.
Some of the old houses in Xitang have earthen grass growing almost a foot high across their roofs. According to local folklore, the spirits of former residents were believed to have become attached to this grass. Its abundant growth was said to protect the peace and longevity of the historic houses while also bringing prosperity and harmony to the ancient town.
Tongli Town
Tongli Town is a national 4A-rated tourist destination and is recognized as one of China's top ten historic and cultural towns as well as one of the country's top ten charming towns. It is located in Wujiang District of Jiangsu Province, about 18 kilometers east of Suzhou and approximately 80 kilometers west of Shanghai.
The town has received numerous national honors, including recognition among China's first group of national garden cities, designation as one of China's top ten film and television production bases, and several awards related to cultural living, sanitation, and urban planning. Tuisi Garden, the central attraction of Tongli, is a nationally protected cultural heritage site and has also been included on the World Heritage List.
Because of this, Tongli has become the only ancient water town in the Jiangnan region that contains a site recognized as a World Cultural Heritage.
Yiren Town
Visitors are often captivated by the architecture and cultural character of Yiren Town. After exploring the ancient town, many people describe their strongest impressions with words such as surprise, excitement, admiration, and amazement. Few expect Chuxiong to contain such a spectacular cultural tourism destination with such distinctive architecture, traditions, customs, and scenery.
The area combines impressive buildings, beautiful landscapes, attractive waterways, and the unique charm of Yi culture. Traditional folk customs and the original ecological lifestyle of the Yi people are presented through ancient-style stages, singing and dancing performances, bonfire gatherings, carnivals, and other activities. Visitors can experience the living culture of the Yi people and create memorable travel experiences.
Wuzhen
Wuzhen is often regarded as one of the defining images of southern China. With more than a thousand years of history and culture, beautiful traditional water-town scenery, distinctive local cuisine, and a wide variety of folk festivals, Wuzhen has developed into a living representation of ancient Eastern civilization.
Its deep cultural heritage and enduring lifestyle have allowed traditional customs and wisdom to continue through generations. The town's atmosphere is also closely connected with its long-standing appreciation for books and learning, creating a fascinating historical scene. Alongside its cultural richness, Wuzhen also offers naturally beautiful scenery.
Yongzhi Town
Yongzhi Town, situated in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, is considered one of the six renowned ancient towns in the Jiangnan region. Established in 503, the town has earned the reputation of being the “Bridge Capital of Jiangnan.”
Rivers and waterways extend throughout the town, creating a landscape in which clear water surrounds the historic settlement and houses and bridges face one another across the canals. The combination of waterways and traditional architecture gives Yongzhi its distinctive ancient-town character.
Nanxun Town
Nanxun Ancient Town is celebrated as a “land of culture” and a “land of poetry and books.” Throughout its history, it has produced many notable figures, including Zhang Jingjiang, an important figure during the Republic of China period, Zhang Shiming, one of the initiators of the Xiling Seal Society, and Xu Chi, a well-known poet and essayist.
In June 2001, the Zhang Shiming Residence Complex in Nanxun was included among the fifth group of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units. In 2005, Nanxun Ancient Town received recognition as one of the second group of Famous Historical and Cultural Towns in China. It was also designated a national 5A tourist attraction and received other national honors, becoming the first national 5A tourist attraction in Huzhou.
Lijiang Town
With a long history and a simple, picturesque atmosphere, Lijiang combines the character of both a water town and a mountain settlement. Water flows through the city while mountains surround it, creating the distinctive landscape of “a city within the mountains and water within the city.”
Lijiang is also associated with the renowned Yulong Snow Mountain scenic area. The region includes the ancient town of Lijiang, which was established during the Southern Song Dynasty, along with numerous historic temples and religious sites.
The magnificent Yulong Snow Mountain reaches 5,596 meters in elevation. The area is also home to the world-famous Tiger Leaping Gorge, known for being one of the deepest and most dramatic gorges in the world, as well as Shigu, which is celebrated as the “First Bend of the Yangtze River.” Other attractions include Laojun Mountain, famous for its mountain vegetation and Danxia landforms, along with Dawn and other extensive areas featuring remarkable geological scenery.
Zhujiajiao
Several years ago, Zhujiajiao still retained a strongly traditional and old-fashioned appearance. However, the rapid development brought by economic change has gradually transformed the town. Over just a few years, the appearance of this historic settlement has changed considerably as more than five hundred years of history have encountered the steady movement of modern crowds.
Its colorful scenery and well-preserved historic buildings remain, but extensive commercial development has covered or altered some of the town's original character. Its location close to central Shanghai gives Zhujiajiao a natural advantage as a tourist destination.
At the same time, it is difficult to know how many Shanghai residents have actually visited the town. Although Zhujiajiao may not have an especially strong reputation, it receives many visitors, and its relatively ordinary character has itself become part of its appeal. Surrounded by the enormous metropolis of Shanghai, finding such a traditional ancient town nearby is still something quite special.
Mudu Town
Mudu Town lies west of Suzhou near Taihu Lake and is another well-known ancient town in the Jiangnan region. The area is blessed with attractive scenery and abundant natural resources. Famous mountains such as Lingyan, Shishan, and Qizi surround the region, creating a landscape that has earned Mudu the nickname “Treasure Basin.”
With its combination of historic surroundings, mountain scenery, and traditional water-town character, Mudu provides visitors with another opportunity to experience the distinctive beauty of southern China's ancient towns.
