Exploring Lighthouses in the Western Cape
If lighthouses captivate you—their history, their stories, and their steadfast presence along rugged coastlines—you might be a lighthouse aficionado. I know I am. That’s why I adore exploring lighthouses along South Africa’s Western Cape. These towering coastal sentinels carry a certain magic, guiding sailors through stormy seas and dark nights, while standing as monuments to human ingenuity and resilience.

South Africa is home to some of the country’s oldest and most fascinating lighthouses, with origins dating back to the 1400s. Built as critical navigational aids, they warned ships of dangerous rocks and shifting coastlines. Each lighthouse tells a tale, not just through its architecture, but also through its light patterns, colours, and placement along the shore.
To help mariners identify them during the day, lighthouses were painted in striking patterns; no two are alike. These coastal landmarks rise dramatically along the Western Cape’s stunning shoreline, continuing to inspire curiosity and wanderlust. While some lighthouses have been decommissioned, many remain operational, some even automated and monitored remotely. A few have been converted into unique accommodations, allowing travellers to experience life where lighthouse keepers once stood watch.
Here’s a guide to some of South Africa’s most iconic lighthouses worth visiting:
Cape Point Lighthouse
A Majestic Sentinel at the Cape Peninsula
Standing proudly at the southwestern tip of the Cape Peninsula, Cape Point Lighthouse has been guiding ships since 1859. Beyond its vital role in maritime safety, the lighthouse offers visitors sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and rugged cliffs where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans seem to meet.
The Flying Dutchman Funicular, Africa’s only commercial funicular railway, takes you from the lower car park to the lighthouse viewpoint, winding through vibrant fynbos and sparing visitors a steep climb. Once at the top, you can explore walking trails, capture stunning photos, and immerse yourself in the biodiversity of the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.
Cape Agulhas Lighthouse
Where Oceans Meet
At Africa’s southernmost tip, Cape Agulhas Lighthouse has guided sailors since 1848. Its iconic spiral staircase leads to panoramic views of the rugged coastline and the dramatic confluence of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Inspired by the ancient Pharos of Alexandria, it’s South Africa’s third lighthouse, now a National Monument. Explore the museum, dine at the on-site restaurant, and wander through Agulhas National Park’s windswept trails.
Robben Island Lighthouse
A Beacon Amid History
Situated on Minto Hill, the Robben Island Lighthouse has stood since 1864. It offers panoramic views of Table Bay and Cape Town, while its flashing light has helped mariners navigate the often-turbulent waters. Visitors here experience not only South Africa’s political history but also the resilience symbolized by this enduring structure.
Danger Point Lighthouse
Guardian of the Walker Bay Coastline
Perched along Walker Bay Nature Reserve near Gansbaai since 1895, Danger Point Lighthouse warns of treacherous rocks that claimed ships like the British troopship Birkenhead. Visitors can drive, cycle, or walk to the lighthouse and enjoy panoramic ocean views, and perhaps spot whales or hear tales of ghostly legends like the Flying Dutchman.
Hangklip Lighthouse
Overlooking False Bay near Pringle Bay since 1960, Hangklip Lighthouse sends a rotating electric flash every ten seconds. Surrounded by the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, visitors can hike scenic trails, spot seabirds, and enjoy the Atlantic vistas.
Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse
Located in Mossel Bay since 1864, Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse remains staffed 24/7. Tour the lighthouse, dine in its base restaurant, or spend the night in guest rooms. Nearby attractions include the St. Blaize Trail and Diaz Museum.
Green Point Lighthouse
Cape Town’s oldest working lighthouse, built in 1824, Green Point Lighthouse guides ships along the treacherous Atlantic Seaboard. Visitors can climb inside for panoramic views of the ocean and the city.
Roman Rock Lighthouse
Situated on a solitary rock in False Bay near Simon’s Town since 1861, Roman Rock Lighthouse is the only South African lighthouse built on an offshore rock. Accessible by boat, it offers stunning coastal views.
Milnerton Lighthouse
Located on Table Bay, Milnerton Lighthouse has guided vessels since 1960. Its white tower and red lantern frame Cape Town’s skyline, making it a popular photography spot.
Stompneus Point Lighthouse (Shelley Point)
Since 1939, this West Coast lighthouse has helped ships navigate near St Helena Bay. The surrounding area includes the West Coast National Park, famous for spring wildflowers and marine wildlife.
Slangkop Lighthouse
Standing 33 meters tall since 1919 near Kommetjie, Slangkop Lighthouse offers sweeping ocean views, scenic walks, and seasonal whale watching.
Cape Columbine Lighthouse
Built in 1936 on Castle Rock near Paternoster, Cape Columbine Lighthouse combines historic architecture with dramatic West Coast views. Visitors can explore the surrounding nature reserve and enjoy fresh seafood in the village.
Dassen Island Lighthouse
Established in 1893, this lighthouse warns ships of Dassen Island’s reefs. Though access is restricted, nearby boat tours provide stunning views and insight into the island’s wildlife, including African penguins.
Quoin Point Lighthouse
Since 1955, Quoin Point Lighthouse has guided vessels along one of South Africa’s most dangerous coasts. Visitors can enjoy nearby cottages, scenic walks, and the dramatic landscape of the Elim area.
Lighthouses are more than navigational aids—they are portals into history, symbols of resilience, and gateways to breathtaking coastal scenery. From the cliffs of the Western Cape to the remote shores of Quoin Point, South Africa’s lighthouses invite exploration, photography, and adventure. Grab your camera, follow the coast, and step into the stories these sentinels have been telling for centuries.
