Motorcycles have fascinated riders for over a century—but did you know some of their stories are downright surprising? From record-breaking rides to celebrity bike ventures, here’s a list of 10 awesome motorcycle facts that will amaze both beginners and seasoned bikers alike.
1. Motorcycles date back to the 1800s
Yes, motorcycles have been around for more than 130 years! The first gas-powered motorcycle was the Daimler Reitwagen, built in 1885 by German inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. It marked the beginning of the motorized two-wheel revolution.
2. The word “motorcycle” wasn’t used until 1894
Initially called a “petrol bicycle,” the term “motorcycle” became official when Hildebrand & Wolfmuller, a German company, began mass-producing two-wheelers in 1894. In Germany, the bikes were called motorrad, literally translating to “motorcycle.”
3. Helmets became mandatory after a tragic accident
Colonel T.E. Lawrence, famously known as Lawrence of Arabia, died in a motorcycle crash in 1935 while avoiding two boys on bicycles. His death led British neurosurgeon Hugh Cairns to research the life-saving benefits of helmets. Thanks to his studies, wearing helmets became a legal requirement in many countries worldwide.
4. The first Harley-Davidson barely reached 25 mph
When William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson completed their first Harley in 1904, it was used in a race where it placed fourth. The bike had a single-cylinder engine and even used a tomato can as a carburetor! Hard to imagine today’s Harleys racing at over 180 mph.
5. The tiniest rideable motorcycle is just over 2 inches tall
Swede Tom Wiberg built Smalltoe, the world’s smallest functional motorcycle, measuring only 2.55 inches in height and weighing 2.4 pounds. With a 0.3-horsepower engine, it can reach speeds of 1.24 mph. Guinness World Records recognized Wiberg’s creation in 2003 after he rode it 32.8 feet—proving it’s actually rideable!
6. The longest motorcycle journey lasted over a decade
Argentinian adventurer Emilio Scotto holds the record for the longest motorcycle trip ever. From 1985 to 1995, he rode his 1980 Honda GoldWing GL1100, covering 457,000 miles (735,000 km) across 232 countries without returning home until the journey was complete. Talk about dedication!
7. The longest ride backwards lasted nearly 5 hours
In India, Havildar Pradeep set the Guinness record on November 10, 2020, for riding a motorcycle backwards for 204.4 km in 4 hours and 47 minutes. Definitely not something we recommend trying—safety first!
8. The priciest motorcycle ever sold cost $11 million
Luxury can get extreme. The Neiman Marcus Limited Edition Fighter was auctioned in 2012 for $11 million, making it the most expensive motorcycle ever sold. Designer motorcycles meet high fashion, and this bike proves it.
9. Famous motorcycle brands make way more than bikes
Some of the brands you know and love for bikes actually make a surprising range of other products:
Kawasaki produces rockets, helicopters, ships, trains, and even missiles.
Suzuki manufactures wheelchairs, cars, and marine engines.
Yamaha started as a piano maker and still produces musical instruments alongside golf carts, boats, industrial robots, and more.
10. Keanu Reeves has his own motorcycle company
Yes, Keanu Reeves, the star of The Matrix, is a passionate biker. After surviving a motorcycle crash in the 1980s, he combined his love for bikes with entrepreneurship and founded Arch Motorcycle Company in 2011, creating custom high-performance motorcycles.
From tiny motorcycles to decade-long journeys and celebrity bike ventures, motorcycles have a rich history full of surprises. Whether you ride for fun or just admire them, these facts prove there’s more to motorcycles than meets the eye!
